BHS Medications

Medication availability, packaging, and method of delivery are constantly changing.   Always be attentive to the concentration and dosage of all medications and don't take it for granted (to believe that something is true without making sure) that your medication is always the same as before.  Below, you will see items that have been changed, notifications from the hospital, or that were noted by our crews.

Due to a temporary shortage, there may be drug boxes that you utilize with a multi-dose vial of Diazepam in them until we can receive our regular syringes.  That said, they are in baggies with “date opened and initials” stickers on them as shown.  You will document the same for wastes as has been past practice.  There are 50mg in 10mL vials.  We would want to waste the remaining each time as they are only good for 28 days.

Solumedrol is being packaged differently.   The Solumedrol is a powder and there is a vial of Sterile Water (10 ml).  Note:  only inject 2 ml of Sterile Water into the vial of Solumedrol.

Morphine was found packaged differently in a drug box.  There is a protective cover over the plunger that needs to be removed prior to using the Morphine.

In the next several weeks, Butler Hospital Pharmacy will be transitioning from nitroglycerin spray to tablets in the ambulance drug boxes. This move will save approximately $100 per box.

The tablets are for sublingual administration only which, of course, are to dissolve under the patients tongue. If there are any questions to proper administration please contact me.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thank you!

We just received notice that Asthmanefrin (Racepinephrine Inhalation Solution 2.25%) has been recalled. All of our product in the pharmacy is included in the recall. So we would assume all product in the ambulance boxes are recalled as well. The medication is also currently on backorder, so we will not be able to replace it at this time. We will be removing it from the Ambulance boxes as they filter through the department.

Once we can purchase it again, we will restock the boxes.

Thank you.
